John Jay College

The Student Academic Success Programs (SASP) is a network of programs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York that center around diversity, equity, and inclusion while helping to increase academic achievements, persistence, and post-graduate preparation.

Industry: Higher Education

Role: Brand identity, communications

As the sole communications designer, I developed numerous multimedia campaigns to engage and retain students. I collaborated closely with program directors and cross-functional teams to create content strategies that effectively targeted our audience and aligned with organizational goals, ensuring a consistent flow of new content. As a bonus, I used my photography skills to photograph students for marketing campaigns and to create a royalty-free stock library.

Improving program visibility

When I arrived, SASP had a singular visual identity that loosely adhered to John Jay's brand guidelines for all of its programs. I created sub-brands for each program, giving them individual identities while ensuring they remained recognizable as part of the John Jay community. I also established production and quality standards by developing templates and straightforward brand guidelines for the department staff.

A is for APPLE Corps

For the APPLE Corps program, I used the apple from the logo to enhance the visual identity. Here are a postcard and a double-sided foldout poster.

Posters & flyers

I designed these flyers for print. The Showcase flyers were enlarged and used as posters.

Digital displays

There is a large multimedia display in the lobby of the New Building. I created numerous advertisements for these screens and other monitors across the campus for major campaigns such as Majors & Minors and the First Year Student Showcase. I produced social media ads as part of the more prominent campaigns or as one-offs to inform students about important dates, minor events, and class registration.

Yay, swag!

I coordinated with print houses and vendors to create the free promotional items we distributed to students at events and for participating in a program.

Course brochures

The 2018 First Year Seminars course brochure was the first to be designed by a designer specifically for print distribution. I made it visually bold and playful, creating a unique color palette for the non-SASP programs. I applied the same shapes and colors to other First Year materials throughout the school year. Later, John Jay adopted some of these colors for the college's core brand.
